Remember Me Thursday: Shine The Light for Rescue Pets

I am a rescue kitty and I'm so happy and proud! If you have read my rescue story you will know all about my rescue. If not, why don't you get yourself a copy of my book, A Forever Home For Athena? I promise that all proceeds will now be going to three of our favourite animal charities. Not just a percentage, as stated in the book details, but one hundred per cent!

It was a joint decision by Mum and me to donate all proceeds as unfortunately, it isn't selling as well as we'd hoped. It's been available for a few years now. But as I'm not a famous cat maybe no one wants to hear/read my story. I don't understand why, as I'm a beautiful, elegant and enigmatic goddess cat - and not forgetting the very wise and graceful! Mum says I'm funny too 😸 And just as many cats do, I have helped my human mum with her struggles.

So, here's is a little bit of my rescue story.

I was abandoned in someone's garden in North London. A kind person found me and I was taken to Wood Green, the Animals Charity in London. At the same time my now Mum Marie was grieving for her dear dad whom she lost 9 months previously. Mum was a lost soul in many ways and so terribly depressed with how her life was going. Her anxiety levels had hit an all-time high. She was feeling so sad and longed for a little light in her life. That light was me. I was also lost and abandoned. I was sad too. I longed for love and happiness.

In this sorry state, I wondered what was going to happen to me without a mum to take care of me. I am grateful to the staff and volunteers at Wood Green as they looked after me extremely well.  In July, on the 19th, the woman destined to be my human mother walked into the shelter. She came to me first (I was in the first pen, along with my sister Lily). I made sure Mum saw me and wouldn't miss what a beauty I was. I wanted her right away! I must have been doing something right (I was trying to climb the mesh door to get to the top as I wanted out of there!) We touched finger to paw. It was awesome! Such an electrifying sensation of love. Mum was asking the man that took care of us some questions. She couldn't afford to take both Lily and me. She regretted it terribly and she still does. Though I miss Lily I kind of like being an only cat! But I hope she is happy and safe too. On the 21st of July Mum came back to collect me and I was so happy because she fed me more than what I was fed at the shelter and she let me sit on her lap. She stroked me and loved me and I purred with delight. The best part was at night when I fell asleep on the pillow next to her. Mum was very happy too. She felt loved.

By rescuing each other, this has started us both on this journey to blog and write in order to help other homeless animals. We do the best we can to shine the light on animal charities and pets awaiting adoption. Not only via this blog and my book, but also on social media. Mum has a Pinterest board devoted to Pet Rescue. And via our Twitter accounts @mariesymeou and @athenawisekitty we share and retweet other rescues using mostly the hashtag #adoptdontshop.

We want to shine the light on the great work that all charities do. As Brits, we start with animal charities in our own country. But we care about animals all over the world. As Mum is of Greek descent (parents from Cyprus) she feels drawn to helping the cats of Greece and Cyprus, because she knows how bad it is for most of them out there. She isn't proud of her heritage when she sees how animals are treated there, I can tell you! We are not saying everyone is bad as it's obvious now on social media there are so many kind-hearted souls carrying out some major important work and really care about animals that need our help. We admire those people!

Here in England, Mum is a member of Cats Protection. We have so far donated food via their Amazon wish list with the money we've made from the book. Not much as we have said, but we're sure they appreciate it. We've also donated food and cat toys to the Wood Green Amazon wish list. And another great charity we support is The Greek Cat Welfare Society, which is excellent and based in the UK but helping the homeless cats of Greece. These three charities will benefit from the donations of my book.

So let's all join together today, and every day, to help save these precious lives. Without us speaking up for these poor souls, they will have no voice. Without us sharing and caring, they will be forgotten. And that is so wrong.

MARBLES

Marbles: (Photo:Wood Green The Animals Charity)

This is Marbles, a very pretty 9-year-old lady who is looking for a new home. Marbles likes nothing more than to have a warm and cosy place to curl up in and have a snooze. She does like a fuss but on her own terms. She enjoys llittle mini adventures outside too but always looks forward to returning home when it is time for tea. Marbles is at the Godmanchester centre and is hoping to find her forever home soon.

Urgent Appeal: Cassidy is Looking for a Forever Home #adoptdontshop #cats

Someone we know who volunteers at one of our local animal shelters contacted us about this lovely boy who urgently needs a home because his owners are moving. They say they can't take him with them due to their daughter having an allergy.

We are helping to find him a new family and forever home as soon as possible. Just look at his sweet, handsome face :)
Forever Home Wanted for Cassidy
Cassidy is urgently seeking a forever home!

"Hello my name is Cassidy, I am four years old and very friendly. At the moment I live in Edmonton, North London, but my humans' daughter has become allergic to me and I need a new home. I need to live somewhere where I have access to the outside, so nowhere on a busy road and with a secure rear garden. I am in very good health with all jabs up to date and have about six more weeks to live here before my humans move to their new home. Please is there somebody out there who would like to take me on? I promise you I am a good boy and don't scratch the furniture or carpets!"

If you are interested in giving Cassidy a forever home please contact Janice at Kings 020 8350 0100 or email Janice.Downes@kings_group.net

If you can't offer Cassidy a forever home please help by sharing this post!

Happy Gotcha Day!

On this day 6 years ago I came to live with my mum in my forever home. I already blogged about this on our latest Caturday Art post so I would like to thank you all for your lovely comments there.

To show you all what a cute kitten I was, here are some adorable kitten pics of me that I posted on Instagram. Sorry if the quality isn't that great.

Adorable Cats Looking For Loving Homes #charitytuesday

Here are three older kitties who are currently in the care of Wood Green the Animals Charity  and all looking for a loving forever family home

Let's make it happen for these sweeties!

πŸ’–
SOCKS (photo: Wood Green)

Socks is quite sad because she's had a rough time lately. This 9 year old lady is currently being looked after in a foster home to help build her confidence. When she feels settled she loves a good fuss but it may take quite a while to get her feeling comfortable and happy. If you have time and patience to help Socks and give her a loving forever home visit her profile HERE to find out more.

DAISY (photo: Wood Green)

Daisy is stunning, isn't she?  She's had  a bit of a stressful time recently so she is looking for a loving, quiet home. She enjoys spending time in the garden and will occasionally bring little gifts home for you. Daisy needs some time and patience to settle. If you feel you can offer her the home she needs check out her profile to find out more about her.

WILLOW: (photos: Wood Green)

This lovely lady is called Willow. Sadly her previous owner could no longer take care of her and she now finds herself at the shelter. She is a fabulous cat and though she is 11 she is still young at heart. She really enjoys playing with string and likes to go outside and climb fences to sit on top and watch the neighbourhood. Do you want to give this sweet older girl a second chance? Find out more about her HERE.

Throwback Thursday: Posing with the paperback copy of my book #TBT

Here's me in 2013 posing with my book A FOREVER HOME FOR ATHENA

cat author

It's my true rescue story (with a bit of make believe thrown in).  I wrote it with Mum to help raise awareness for pet adoption and also to raise some funds for 3 of our favourite pet charities.

Originally, Mum was only going to give a portion of the royalties to charity, but for the past year or so she decided to donate all the royalties to charity. She isn't in a position to help every animal charity as she isn't a rich author. But she wants to do her bit for the animals and I'm with her all the way because I'm a cat with a mission!

Please think about purchasing my book if you haven't already. It's available from Amazon in both paperback and Kindle format.

Caturday Art: My Gotcha Day!

Happy Caturday!

My actual Gotcha Day is on the 21st July, but I wanted to celebrate it today for Caturday Art.

Athena as a kitten at the animal shelter

The original of the photo above was the one Mum saw on the Wood Green,The Animals Charity website. I was so cute, so how could she resist? For Caturday Art Mum went to PizAp and added some nice pinky art effect (she can't remember which).

Staying in PizAp, Mum made the photo below into sepia so we're joining the  Sepia Saturday hop as well.

Adopt a Cat #CharityTuesday

As a rescue kitty I want to help other rescue cats get rehomed, so we are continuing our new weekly feature for Charity Tuesday, sharing adoptable cats from Wood Green, the Animal Charity (which is where I was rescued). We are so grateful to this amazing charity because without them we wouldn't be together! It's also one of the main charities we support.

THOMAS T (photo: Wood Green)

Thomas T is a handsome chap with big chunky cheeks. He tells me he has been in the wars recently so will need lots of TLC in his new home. He says he is affectionate and will make a lovely loyal companion! He would like a home with no other cats and preferably like to live in a low cat populated area. He is at the London centre (where I was before I got adopted). If you are interested in Thomas click here to view his page on the Wood Green website.

TILLY (photo: Wood Green)

TILLY came to the Godmanchester centre through no fault of her own and, at the moment, she is finding it all a bit scary (I know how she feels, poor girl). Ideally, she would like a quiet home where she can enjoy all of the attention she deservs. She would like you to find out more about her on her own page here

ROO (photo: Wood Green)

This sweet lady is ROO and she says she adores sitting on someone's lap for ages and enjoys cuddles.  She had a difficult time adjusting to life in the cattery at Wood Green after her elderly owner had to go into hospital and she has spent the last 3 months in the quiet of a foster home. She says she has come a very long way in that time and is feeling much more confident, though is still quite an anxious cat and is easily startled by unexpected movements or noises. But she really does want a new forever home where she can potter about and do as she pleases. Ideally she needs a quiet household with someone who is gentle and patient. At 15 years she is in remarkably good health and is already a lovely cat and, with the right person, she has the potential to be a very loving companion. Think you are the right human/guardian/parent for lovely Roo? Visit her profile at Wood Green here

Throwback Thursday: Happy Adopted Kitty! #TBT

We haven't had a Throwback Thursday post for ages so here is one packed full of cuteness. Yes, this is adorable me as a kitten in 2011 washing myself. I look so happy in my new home, don't I? After the traumatic time I had when I was abandoned in someone's garden and then taken to Wood Green, the Animals Charity, I was so grateful to find a forever home with my dear mum Marie and her own mum, my granny. You can read about my rescue story in the book A FOREVER HOME FOR ATHENA here. If you purchase it Mum will donate 100 % of the royalties to 3 of her favourite animal charities.

Hope you like the video!

#charitytuesday Adopt a Cat

As a rescue kitty I want to help other rescue cats get rehomed, so we are continuing our new weekly feature for Charity Tuesday, sharing adoptable cats from Wood Green, the Animal Charity (which is where I was rescued). We are so grateful to this amazing charity because without them, well, we wouldn't be here together! It's also one of the charities we support.

We are not affiliated with the charity, we just want to help animals and give back.

Scratchy (photo:Wood Green)
Scratchy is a little nervous when it comes to new people but a few head scratches and chin tickles and he will quickly become your best friend. He seeks a kind, loving, caring home. He is at the Godmanchester centre. Find out more about him HERE

Mashmallow (photo:Wood Green)
Marshmallow was brought in through no fault of her own and is finding it very scary. It may take some time, and a few Dreamies, to win her over but once she finds her confidence she can be very friendly and affectionate. If you think you can offer her the home she deserves click HERE to find out more.

Roo (photo:Wood Green)
Lovely Roo is a sweet, affectionate girl who loves fuss once she has had a chance to get to know you. Roo would like a quiet home where she can relax and potter around as much as she wants to. She is finding it difficult coping in a cattery environment so she is on foster and can be rehomed from her foster home. Click HERE to find out more about her. .

My Gotcha Day Anniversary!

We can't believe that it's been four years since I was adopted. To me it was like winning the lottery (and for Mum too). I found the most loving forever home with the purrfect mum. Of course I chose her because I knew she was the one as soon as I saw her walk through the door at the shelter.

Athena and Marie
With my Mum Marie and the photo of me that she saw on the shelter website. Come on, how can anyone resist that face?

But other cats and pets are not so lucky. However, there are so many ways to help them. First of all, you can choose to adopt a pet rather than buy. You could also foster, volunteer, sponsor, donate money or food and other essentials. Most animal shelters have an Amazon wish list these days, which we think is an excellent way to help the shelter of your choice. Mum does this. It's what we have done with most of the proceeds made from my book. Instead of donating money we donate food and toys and stuff from the wish lists of the charities we support.

To celebrate my Gotcha Day Anniversary Mum will donate 50 pence for every comment left on this post to the animal charity that rescued me

So please, leave a comment below and let's see how much we can raise!

Fundraising For Animals In Need: Blog the Change #BtC4A

Hi, Athena here just jotting down some ideas to help Mum with the fund raising.

thinking cat

As we haven't raised quite as much money as we'd hoped from my book (why isn't it a bestseller???), Mum has decided to create some items in her Zazzle stores that are specifically for raising funds for the shelters we support. I must stress here that not all the items in our Zazzle shops are for raising charity funds because, let's face it, we need to eat and pay our bills.

Mum is telling me she hates to talk about money, and it's true because she avoids it most of the time, especially with me. But it has to be said. Honestly, I hear her moaning to other humans about it all the time (and I can read her mind) so even if she doesn't talk to me about it I know everything. Yes Mum, you can't hide anything from me, I am a cat after all. And yes, a very wise one.

Mum always moans about how much she hates having human problems and how she wishes she could just be a cat instead. Oh well, I do see her point because I don't wish to be a human either. But the thing is she has the power within her to at least learn to be calm like a cat. This is what I have been training her to do for ages, but she is so prone to anxiety, the poor woman. I love her very much and so I try to think calm thoughts for her and am always ready to supply extra purrs and cuddles for days (and nights) like that. So come on, Mum. Just be and live in the now.

OK, I think that's calmed her down now as she's just given me the code for this new Pinterest board she created for the said fundraising items, so do check it out!

CATURDAY ART

I've decided, I want to be a famous cat. I think it might be fun. My mum is a bit of a stage mum (she wanted to be a famous singer when she was younger) but she says she will never push me into the limelight if that's not what I really want.

If there's something I am not comfortable with doing, or she herself is not comfortable with me doing, she won't agree to it.

But sometimes, when I see all those other kitties getting their fifteen minutes, well, I wouldn't mind some of that too!

After all, if Grumpy Cat can be a movie star, so can I.

And as I'm a rescue kitty, I would also love to help the other homeless cats when I do make it big. I am doing that now, of course, but sadly, not very successfully.

My mum created this billboard image with PhotoFunia.
