Throwback Thursday Special

Because Wood Green the Animal Charity celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, we thought it would be a great idea to post some of the cats currently waiting for their forever home.

As many of you already know, I was adopted by my mum from their London Centre and it was the best thing that ever happened to us both.

Athena as a kitten
Me in July 2011 straight after I was adopted

Naturally, we shall forever be grateful to this wonderful animal charity and thankful for the amazing work that they do, so we wish you a very Happy Birthday, Wood Green!

The cats featured below are currently available at the London Centre (as featured on the Wood Green website). For more info on how to adopt these cats or to see other cats available please visit the website.

We hope these beautiful cats find the loving forever homes they deserve. Purrs and hugs to them all (and Mum sends lots of kisses) xxxxxx

POPPY
Poppy is a friendly girl who just wants attention. She could sit with you and be stroked for ages! She is a very loving cat and in the right household would make a perfect addition to the family. Poppy does not like other cats so she would prefer to be the only cat in her new home. Does this beautiful girl have a space in your home?
MAX
Max (black) and his sister Macey (tortoiseshell) haven’t had a great start in their young lives. They were unwanted kittens who didn’t get a lot of affection and are timid around people. Those gorgeous kittens will need experienced cat owners who will be willing to spend time with them and help them gain confidence. Once they will come out of their shells, they will make wonderful and happy pets who will reward you with their trust and love.
THOR
Thor is a young chap who is just fabulous... such a big softie who has truck loads of affection to give to his new owners. If you are looking for an easy going lad then he would be the perfect cat for you!
TOMMY
This wonderful sweet and sensitive cat is called Tommy. He loves having a walk around outside and will gently rub around your legs whilst inside! He loves the attention that we give him; especially strokes, treats and playtime! Can you give this loving and playful cat a home where he will be the centre of attention, for now and forever?
MELODY
Melody is an affectionate pretty british shorthaired cat, with gorgeous white fur! She arrived at our centre along with her kitten Harmony. Since her arrival she has been a very sweet, purry cat! We''re sure that she will accompany wherever you go around the house, due to her love of strokes and attention. Melody will need a family who can give her all of the fuss that she deserves. Can Melody''s purring tune win over your heart?
MACEY
Macey (tortoiseshell) and her brother Max (black) haven’t had a great start in their young lives. They were unwanted kittens who didn’t get a lot of affection and are timid around people. Those gorgeous kittens will need experienced cat owners who will be willing to spend time with them and help them gain confidence. Once they will come out of their shells, they will make wonderful and happy pets who will reward you with their trust and love

Book Review: Solomon's Kitten by Sheila Jeffries

I'm going to say a little bit about this fabulous book before handing you over to Mum for a full review.

Mum read Solomon's Kitten to me and I loved it so much! Tallulah is a great little kitten who truly suffers at the beginning of her life after being abandoned. Of course this made me extremely sad for her as I too was abandoned as a kitten, though I don't remember much about it. And I don't want to either. I just want to focus on the life I have right now - with my wonderful mum and granny

But this is an amazing, heartwarming book and it reminded me of the good things in life too, and the healing power of love. It's a must read! Don't miss it, especially you cat lovers out there! And dog lovers too because there is a lovely dog called Amber in it as well, who Tallulah simply adores. I don't understand that kind of love for another animal, but for those of you that do, you will find it incredibly moving. Get your human to read you this fantastic story now!

And now over to you, Mum.

Solomon's Kitten

Solomon's Kittenis an incredible story. An emotional journey of happiness and tears. It is a book full of healing love and purrs.

The story follows Tallulah, a 'special kitten' who has 'come to heal' a family. Very soon after she is born, the tiny kitten is taken from her dad Solomon and dumped like rubbish in a hedge. After enduring hunger and fear, the abandoned kitten soon finds a new home with a nice family, forming an unbreakable bond with the daughter TammyLee, who calls Tallulah her 'magic puss cat'. But TammyLee is harbouring a dark secret - a secret Tallulah already knows about.

My heart swelled with love for the kitten Tallulah, who also narrates this inspiring book. Through the eyes of this sweet little kitten, we experience all the ups and downs of modern family life. Not only does TammyLee have a secret, but she is also a carer for her disabled mother and has to juggle this with her school work and carrying the heavy burden of her secret, as well as having to deal with her rather complicated relationship with her dad.

Author Shelia Jeffries says she based Tallulah on a cat she had as a child, and the love and understanding of cats is clearly evident in her storytelling. Her portrayal of the pet-human bond really pulled at my heartstrings and touched my soul deeply as it is a bond I can relate to so well.

But this book is not all love and light, and in many parts I cried. At one point I was reading on the bed with Athena sleeping next to me. I held back the tears because she easily picks up on any upset I may be feeling, even as she sleeps. Well she did pick up. And in what was a most magical moment, she turned to me and held my gaze as I wiped away a tear. Then she slow-blinked at me (which means I love you in cat speak.) It's just so amazing - that unbreakable soul bond and pure unconditional love between pet and human - and this emotion is illustrated perfectly by the author.

Sheila also has the rare ability to capture life through the perspective of a cat. Yes, this is fiction, but animals are sentient beings and they do also have the ability to think. I've always believed this. And so this book touched me deeply in that respect as well. I also enjoyed reading the parts about animal healing, and the theme of spirituality, reincarnation, and how the soul survives death is something that rings true for me too.

Like Solomon's Tale, Solomon's Kitten is a book that will help younger children understand more about what happens after death and it teaches everyone the importance of pets and what a true gift they are when they enter our lives.

In my opinion, Solomon's Kitten is a unique story that deserves to be made into a film or TV drama.

I am definitely looking forward to reading more of this author's work in future!

Melt Your Heart Monday

Saw this recently and just had to share. It reminded me of how I felt when I was waiting for someone to come and rescue me. I too was stuck behind bars longing for a safe, loving, forever home. When Mum watched this she cried because she felt for these poor souls. The way they speak in this video, is just how she hears it in her mind when she looks into the eyes of all homeless pets.

The most poignant scene for us is when the paw touches the human finger. That's exactly what happened to us when we first met at Wood Green the Animal Charity. We touched and our souls became one (though we believe we are one soul and have been through many lifetimes and always will be).

May all homeless animals have the chance to enjoy the security of a loving forever home. They so deserve it! Sending purrs to those that need it xx

Keeping Cats Safe On Bonfire Night

It's that time of year again. Bonfire Night. And in an ideal world there would be no fireworks. But selfish humans have to have their way all the time (they don't just keep it to the one night, which is 5th November, but have to let off those loud bangs from September onwards). Mum says what's the point? If you've seen one firework display you've seen them all. All that noise is annoying. I know I'll be safe and sound indoors with Mum, but what about all the other poor animals out there that don't have that choice?

It seems that most humans choose to forget that this world wasn't created for them alone.

But at least there are some humans that are nice and do think about others, so here's a video of Fireworks Safety Tips for Cats from Wood Green the Animal Charity (the shelter that rescued me and from where Mum adopted me).
