Friday Reads: I'm Not a Skunk #bookreview

cat with books graphic

We love cat books (well, we love everything cats), and we love our blogging pals so it was a pleasure to review this wonderful book by Ellen J Pilch of the 15andmeowing cat blog.

We already read and reviewed Ellen's first book Prancie's Prayer which was just as delightful so we were looking forward to reading this one and we weren't disappointed!

I Am Not a Skunk is about a cat who gets mistaken for a skunk and is Ellen's second picture book. Loosely based on how her beautiful black and white cat Emmy came to live with her, this is a sweet and short tale - purrfect for children but adults will enjoy it too and will love reading it to their kids.

The gorgeous illustrations by Nicolas Peruzzo
also bring the story to life and younger children will delight in returning to flick through the book time and time again.

The illustrations work well on the Kindle version but maybe children would prefer the paperback edition to turn the pages and enjoy gazing at the pictures on their own. It's definitely a storybook to treasure.

And adults too - this little book will surely cheer you up for the day.

We read the Kindle version via KindleUnlimited in the UK.

The paperback edition is also available on Amazon.

Prancie's Prayer #bookreview

cat book review

Mum read to me this fantastic new book by our blogging pal Ellen Pilch of 15andmeowing.

Prancie's Prayer  is a sweet warm-hearted book for children loosely based on the story of how dear cat Prancie came to live with Ellen and the meowing household.

I loved this book. And so did Mum. Not only is the story captivating and well-told but the illustrations by Nicolas Peruzzo are also amazing to look at and these will no doubt enchant any child for hours on end.

We bought the ebook on Kindle (after Mum saw the email from Ellen who kindly sent us a digital copy of the book). Mum thanked her but she doesn't mind that she purchased it on Kindle because she loves the book and also loves helping out fellow authors. It's really hard work being an author and the support from others is always greatly appreciated.

For the most excellent Christmas gift for a child, we recommend the paperback version as children will delight in reading and re-reading the book while flicking through the pages to admire the wonderful images. At the same time, they will learn the true meaning of Christmas.

Happy reading!

A Thousand Purring Cats #BookReview

Disclaimer: We received a free digital copy of the book from the author. All words are our own. Please also note that some links are Amazon affiliate links.

A THOUSAND PURRING CATS by Susan "Sparky" Kedzie

A Thousand Purring Cats

From Amazon

"A Thousand Purring Cats warmly embraces the healing power of positive relationships. Playful text and images invite smiles and laughter with a surprise tug at your heart, while lively characters gently nudge your child closer when they need it most.

A new feel-good classic your family will want to read and reread for years. Whether you are a cat-lover or not, this book will give you a HUG!"

What did we think?

Here's Mum to tell you!

This beautiful little book is full of breathtaking illustrations that will shower any child with immense healing whenever it is needed, because, let's face it, life can be tough at any age.

Not only are the illustrations, which were inspired by the author's own cats, mesmerizing, but the healing text messages accompanying them are incredibly soothing and will work wonders when needed.  As we cat lovers already acknowledge, cats have amazing healing capabilities. They can help decrease blood pressure and to reduce anxiety, amongst other things. Indeed, Athena does all that for me and so much more.

This lovely book is literally, a big "hug" for any child to turn to when they find life overwhelming,  but it's a lovely book for adults too.

It certainly cheered me up this morning!

If you want to read a book that celebrates the amazing love and power of emotional bonds between pets and humans, then don't miss this book! And if you don't have a cat, the book "nudges" you to accept loving hugs from your favourite human too.

This is definitely one of those books children and even adults will want to pick up time and time again.

Kitty Karma #BookReview

This post contains Amazon affiliate links. In full disclosure, we received a free copy of this book for review but opinions are our own.

Kitty Karma Book Review

😻

We were so excited to receive Kitty Karma: Big Stories of Small Cats Who Change Our Lives for reading and review!

From the Kitty Karma website:

"Kitty Karma: Big Stories of the Small Cats Who Change Our Lives is a collaborative book with stories donated by cat rescue workers, cat sanctuary and shelter volunteers, feral colony caretakers, conscious vets, compassionate cat café owners, amazing fosters and awesome cat parents from around the world.

From cats sailing in high seas off the coasts of New Zealand and Mexico to a cat sanctuary in a war zone, from a popular cat café in Kingston, Canada to the first cat café in India, from adventure cats to feral colonies, this heart-warming and heart-rending collection unveils a world of cats rarely seen and rarely known.

Our remarkable editorial contributors include helpers dedicated to saving the lives of cats, multi-award authors, animal communicators and devoted parents who love their fur babies fiercely and passionately. What unites this diverse group of writers? Very simply, a fierce and passionate love for cats. "

Wai-Lin Terry, the creator of Kitty Karma started the Kitty Karma Books publishing company in honour of her beautiful beloved calico cat, Kealani, who crossed the bridge at just over 17 years old of a sudden heart-attack right before her very eyes.

Understandably, this sudden loss was devastating for Wai-Lin and she couldn’t stop crying for weeks. But to help her cope with the shock and pain of her loss, she went online and began reading cat forums and trawling cat websites and blogs. The shared experiences of other cat lovers and owners inspired her to put such stories in a book and so Project Kitty Karma was born with its mission to help raise funds and improve the lives of many cats and kittens.

"I believe that cats are a superior species and need to be given appropriate veneration and adulation," says Wai-Lin. "They bless us when they favour us with their attention and the world is a better place when there is a cat at home and cat fur on our clothes."

And who can argue with that? Not us cat lovers that's for sure. We are undoubtedly blessed to have these beautiful furry soulmates in our lives. They not only give us unconditional love, but they help us live a better life in so many ways.

This book is packed full of heartwarming, heartbreaking, moving stories about cats and their humans and also includes beautiful photos. Flicking through the book before I began reading, I couldn't wait to meet these gorgeous felines. I just knew their stories would be remarkable and would touch me profoundly.

Kitty Karma Book Review

And as soon as I began reading I found myself swept away on a rollercoaster of emotions. I smiled, I cried, I empathised and I fell a little in love with all the beautiful felines. (Don't worry, Athena - you will always be my NO 1.)

I admit that some stories were just too painful to read and truly tore at my heart. What some animals have to endure at the hands of some humans is just unbearable to think about. I wish I could help all the cats in the world (and all animals really.) But I am one woman and am doing my best. However what this book conveys is that each one of us can do it in our own small way. One step at a time. If all animal lovers on this planet took a little time out to help animals then how incredible would that be? Indeed, if you do buy this book you will be helping in your own special way as all net proceeds from the sales of Kitty Karma will be donated to needy cat shelters, rescues and sanctuaries around the world.

This is a book every cat lover should have on their bookshelf and I highly recommend it!

What's your verdict, Athena?

All Hands on Pet! #BookReview

Disclaimer: We received a free copy of the book to give our honest opinion. All words and thoughts are our own.  Some Amazon affiliate links are included.

All Hands on Pet Book Review

Today we are reviewing All Hands on Pet! Your How-To Guide on Home Physical Therapy Methods for Pets by Susan E. Davis, PT

From the publisher:

Susan E. Davis has been dubbed “Doctor Dolittle of the PT World,” by Northwestern Medicine Magazine, a publication of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
All Hands on Pet! Your How-To Guide on Home Physical Therapy Methods for Pets offers safe and effective actions pet owners can apply through the animal’s entire life spectrum. Information provided applies to multiple species: canine, feline, avian, exotics and farm animals (non-equine).•Includes 38 photos with directional arrows, plus informative explanations in an approachable style•Fills the gap where the demand for physical therapy services for pets outweighs the availability of qualified providers•Cross-references to Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation for Animals: A Guide for the Consumer•Prudent tips, techniques, and advice typical of that given to author’s own clients•Real stories of courage from the author's actual patient caseload
All Hands on Pet! is a must-read for pet owners everywhere!

All Hands on Pet! by Susan E. Davis, PT is an amazing resource for those interested in pet health and for those of us who care about providing the best possible care for our beloved pets. The book is aimed at pet parents/guardians as a guide to helping them take care of their pets through all stages of their lives. From kittenhood and puppyhood, right through to old age.

With her years of experience and obvious love of animals, Susan guides you to implement preventative measures with your pet at home in a clear, informative manner with easy-to-follow instructions coupled with clear illustrations. The reader will not find the language and techniques described overwhelming.

As pet parents, we all want the best for our fur-children and so it is important to arm ourselves with as much knowledge on how to care for them as possible. Of course, nothing can replace professional veterinary care and this is disclosed at the very beginning of the book. Any alternative therapy administered at home should be given simultaneously with your vet.

As an animal Reiki healer myself and with a diploma in Cat Behaviour and Care I really enjoyed learning the techniques in this book. As a cat mum and animal lover, I am interested in all aspects of animal care. I also found the resources at the end of the book really useful.

In conclusion, this is a must-read for any animal lover and pet parent and it is a book that will definitely join my other animal care books on the shelf where I can pick it up for easy reference.

Before I go, I have to add that I love that the cover of this book is green. Not only does it match our blog colour/theme and Athena's beautiful eyes, but green is also the colour of healing (we all know how calming it can be to be surrounded by the lush greenery of nature). It is also the colour I visualize when using Reiki on animals.

About the author

Real Hamsters Don't Bite #BookReview

Bedtime Stories with Athena Book Reviews

Mum read me this great story Real Hamsters Don't Bite: Mighty and Brennon Run Away to Find Cat Land and Unzip the Truth* by Alexis Cleoford.

We received a free digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

About the book

From Amazon:

"All is not what it seems… Mighty is stuck in an elegant waiting room which he calls a dungeon even though he gets plenty of fresh water and food. When Mighty’s parents pick him and his brother up, Mighty decides that he will find a place where cats are treated like kings. One day clumps of yellow goo start falling from the sky, and cats are attacked by small rodents. No one knows why the rodents are attacking cats. The two feline brothers see their dream destination on TV and want to have fun there. The attacks and mysterious yellow goop falling from the sky give the two feline brothers another incentive to flee to their dream land. On the way to Cat Land, Mighty and Brennon meet a cat who acts like a human. They fight a naughty cat and also encounter black and white grazing animals which look like aliens to Mighty. They rescue a group of cats from an attack as well. Mighty finally captures a perpetrator and discovers that his secret is only fur deep. Mighty uses this secret to trick others into thinking that he and Brennon are dogs, for a good cause. Despite all the obstacles Mighty and Brennon overcome, nothing could have prepared them for what they experience in their dream land. The brothers’ parents get a phone call to pick their cats up, and the two felines receive the worst punishment that a cat can get for running away: a bath. Not all is dreary as Mighty and Brennon help put a stop to the attacks. They also have a shot at getting to another dream destination."

What did I think?

I loved this story about these adventurous kitties and I could tell that Mum enjoyed reading it to me too.

The story begins when Mighty and his "co-cat" Brennon are taken to a pet hotel and cannot believe how their owners could do that to them. They are so upset and know they can never forgive their owners for dumping them like that. As a cat once taken to a pet hotel myself, I know how awful it feels. It makes you deeply sad and depressed and all you can think of is how could your humans abandon you like that? Panic sets in and you wonder if you will ever see your family or home again.

After this horrible experience, Mighty and Brennon do get to go back home with their parents and it seems maybe they weren't abandoned after all, but they cannot help wanting to get back at them so they decide to run away. By running away, they are hoping to find Cat Land, where they believe to find cat paradise where they will be treated with the respect they deserve. But along the way, there are quite a few surprises in store and some life lessons to learn.

This is a thoroughly engaging read and enjoyable for all ages. Children will love it and younger ones will love having it read to them. Both Mum and I thought it was really interesting how the author describes cat life from the cat's point of view. There were also some fabulous descriptions. We also thought it's great how some educational stuff about cats is slipped into the tale here and there. Children learn by reading, and this is a fantastic way of teaching them important facts about felines.

On the whole, this was a great read and we would both highly recommend it for any animal or cat lover, both young and old 😻

BOOK REVIEW: Elvis the Gunslinger

***We received a free copy of this book for an honest review. All opinions are our own***

Elvis the Gunslinger Review

We have just had the pleasure of reading this great new book called Elvis the Gunslinger by Romey Connell.

Elvis the Gunslinger

Here's the book blurb courtesy of Amazon UK:

"In a feline rendition of the Old West, where cats ride dogs like horses, he stands at the intersection of James Bond and John Wayne. A suave, card-playing Catanova who loves fine wine and is a dead-eye with both pistol and rifle. Along with his trusty sidekick, he’s off to settle a score with a long-forgotten enemy – a crusty mobster who has catnapped the only son of a wealthy and admired captain of industry. Take a train across the landscape and then saddle up and ride into the hills to watch him work his magic, with unforgettable characters navigating unpredictable twists and turns. Try as they might to stop him, he’s always a step ahead. Be it by luck, serendipity or maybe because he’s just a little wilier than the rest. If the good guys are going to win, shouldn’t they have a little fun while they’re at it?"

What we thought

Mum read this book to me and we thought it was such a great fast-paced story that both kids and adults will definitely love.

I thought that this Elvis guy, a crime-solving feline, was so cool. Plus, with the name Elvis, Mum was even more intrigued to read the book as she's a fan of the singer Elvis. I, of course, don't know much about singer Elvis, other than Mum mentions him from time to time because he reminds her of her childhood and her late dad.

So how about the story itself?

This is a great adventure story full of interesting characters. As we don't want to give the plot away, we'd just like to say that if you're looking for a page-turning adventure featuring cats, then you'll enjoy reading this book!

Elvis is so fun-loving, smart and handsome, and from a female perspective, I think all you lady cats will fall in love with him.

I love the fact that Elvis plays cards and Mum thought it cool that he drinks wine but he likes 'red' more than Chardonnay (Mum's fave). Well, that's not surprising really because he is a man, and men always prefer red wine for some reason.

Not only is this story hugely compelling, but Mum thought the writing was extremely good too. We both liked the vivid descriptions and agreed that this would help humans understand life from a feline perspective more.

At first, as Mum and I are not keen on cowboys or westerns, we weren't sure we'd enjoy Elvis the Gunslinger. But we surprised ourselves that we did and I've come to the conclusion that cowboys in a feline world are not so bad at all.

Elvis the Gunslinger is a fun and entertaining tale that any cat lover will enjoy reading.

Clockwork Calico: The Golden Owl #BookReview

Living with a writer Mum, I have grown to be rather bookish myself, as you can see from this photo today.

Mum read this fantastic book to me and I thought I'd give it a mention on my Wordless Wednesday post (also Whiskers Wednesday and Wednesday Wisdom). This the purrfect day to post about books I feel, especially cat books. Well, they're the only type of books we want to feature or review on this blog since our readers are mostly cat lovers! (We don't mind other pet books, though).

But anyway, here is the book Mum read to me and she thought it was great (and so did I).
CLOCKWORK CALICO: THE GOLDEN OWL

Calico Cogg is a cat like no other. Rescued from the streets of Ticswyk by esteemed inventor Lionel Cogg, she has been fitted with implants to enhance her natural feline abilities. When Lionel is kidnapped, Cali must put her skills to the test to free him. Dark schemes are in the works—a plague of tiny clockwork spiders are wreaking havoc on the city’s inhabitants. Only Cali, with help from her trusted mouse friend Emmit, can get to the bottom of it all. With a criminal mastermind planning a major heist, Cali must race against time to unravel his plot before he escapes with the city’s greatest treasure.
Mum thought Clockwork Calico by Lana Axe was 'a fun and intriguing read' (you can read her full review on Amazon HERE  - under Marie S) and we both highly recommend it. Cat lovers will love it!

Wordy Wordless Wednesday: Timba Comes Home review

Though it's supposed to be Wordless Wednesday we have more of a Wordy Wednesday today because we want to tell you about a fantastic new book by our dear friend Sheila Jeffries.

Sheila is the best-selling author of Solomon's Tale and Solomon's Kitten, both of which are must reads for any cat lover. The latest in the Solomon saga is Timba Comes Home. Sheila very kindly sent us a copy of the book and we just had to review it. We would have done so anyway, because we love her books. Mum has already left a review on Amazon, but I thought it would be great to tell you what I think.

whiskers wednesday

Mum read this book to me and as you can see from the above pic I enjoyed it so much that I dozed off. That's me after the book ended. I didn't sleep through Mum's reading, if that's what you think! As you know, cats are always listening in even when we appear to be sleeping.

I loved Timba, the sweet little black cat, immediately. He is a great little character, strong and resilient, loving and forgiving, and his purpose in life is to be a healing support cat for a young troubled boy called Leroy and a nice kindhearted lady called Angie. He also has to help his brother Vati, a sensitive and mystical cat, and quite a different character to Timba. But they need each other and together they are a strong force.

When the two brothers are abandoned as kittens, they become separated but luckily fate brings them together again in order to help the people they love.
There is a lot of love and healing in this book. And it sensitively portrays the amazing bond between a cat and his humans. Parts of it brought tears to my mum's eyes, and I of course offered her my own healing purrs to soothe her as she stopped reading to kiss me on my forehead and hug me close.

Mum sometimes says that it's me and her against the world, and in this book it seems that it's Timba and Vati against the world too as they are twin souls (like me and mum!).

I don't want to give too much of the plot away, but if you enjoy books from the perspective of a cat, warmly told and with a touch of spirituality, then this book is for you! It also makes a great heartwarming Christmas gift for any cat lover.

Cat Book and Cat Tarot

This post contains affiliate links. If you purchase via some of these links I will receive a small commission.

Mum wants to share these with you. She got them at Christmas and she absolutely loves them!

First, here is this amazing cat book. It's bigger than me as you can see!
The Cat Encyclopedia

It's a book called The Cat Encyclopedia and it's so heavy that Mum fears she might drop it on me so she has to be very careful when she is reading it.

This book has so many amazing feline facts. Everything is here and more. Right from the earliest history of cats on this planet to how we evolved into the domestic cats that now dominate the world.

Yes, all you need to know about cats is here. Just so much detail you probably won't get with other cat books (those that Mum has read anyway, and she's read a lot of cat books!). You will learn about cat anatomy, cat care, cat behavior, cat health and lots lots more.

My mum is fascinated by the astonishing beauty of this book and its wealth of information. Packed with stunning images and extensive details, it's a must-read and must-have for any cat lover!

Cat Encyclopedia

Cat Tarot

And now for the Cat Tarot card deck.

Tarot of Pagan Cats

Tarot of Pagan Cats Mini DeckOne of my mum's many hobbies is the Tarot. She has been dabbling in it on and off for years. So, as a cat lover, of course, she just fell in love with this cat tarot deck. It's called the Tarot of Pagan Cats Tarot Deck.

The artwork of this deck is beautiful and Mum can't stop admiring it. She says it helps her feel better and she finds all the art and symbolism inspiring. She suddenly has so many creative ideas. Maybe it's in the cards?

The Tarot of Pagan Cats Mini Tarot deck is based on the symbolism of The Original Rider Waite Tarot Deck
and sees the tarot from the cat's perspective.

What does this cat think?
I think this tarot deck is purrfect and magical - just like us cats!

Book Review: Solomon's Kitten by Sheila Jeffries

I'm going to say a little bit about this fabulous book before handing you over to Mum for a full review.

Mum read Solomon's Kitten to me and I loved it so much! Tallulah is a great little kitten who truly suffers at the beginning of her life after being abandoned. Of course this made me extremely sad for her as I too was abandoned as a kitten, though I don't remember much about it. And I don't want to either. I just want to focus on the life I have right now - with my wonderful mum and granny

But this is an amazing, heartwarming book and it reminded me of the good things in life too, and the healing power of love. It's a must read! Don't miss it, especially you cat lovers out there! And dog lovers too because there is a lovely dog called Amber in it as well, who Tallulah simply adores. I don't understand that kind of love for another animal, but for those of you that do, you will find it incredibly moving. Get your human to read you this fantastic story now!

And now over to you, Mum.

Solomon's Kitten

Solomon's Kittenis an incredible story. An emotional journey of happiness and tears. It is a book full of healing love and purrs.

The story follows Tallulah, a 'special kitten' who has 'come to heal' a family. Very soon after she is born, the tiny kitten is taken from her dad Solomon and dumped like rubbish in a hedge. After enduring hunger and fear, the abandoned kitten soon finds a new home with a nice family, forming an unbreakable bond with the daughter TammyLee, who calls Tallulah her 'magic puss cat'. But TammyLee is harbouring a dark secret - a secret Tallulah already knows about.

My heart swelled with love for the kitten Tallulah, who also narrates this inspiring book. Through the eyes of this sweet little kitten, we experience all the ups and downs of modern family life. Not only does TammyLee have a secret, but she is also a carer for her disabled mother and has to juggle this with her school work and carrying the heavy burden of her secret, as well as having to deal with her rather complicated relationship with her dad.

Author Shelia Jeffries says she based Tallulah on a cat she had as a child, and the love and understanding of cats is clearly evident in her storytelling. Her portrayal of the pet-human bond really pulled at my heartstrings and touched my soul deeply as it is a bond I can relate to so well.

But this book is not all love and light, and in many parts I cried. At one point I was reading on the bed with Athena sleeping next to me. I held back the tears because she easily picks up on any upset I may be feeling, even as she sleeps. Well she did pick up. And in what was a most magical moment, she turned to me and held my gaze as I wiped away a tear. Then she slow-blinked at me (which means I love you in cat speak.) It's just so amazing - that unbreakable soul bond and pure unconditional love between pet and human - and this emotion is illustrated perfectly by the author.

Sheila also has the rare ability to capture life through the perspective of a cat. Yes, this is fiction, but animals are sentient beings and they do also have the ability to think. I've always believed this. And so this book touched me deeply in that respect as well. I also enjoyed reading the parts about animal healing, and the theme of spirituality, reincarnation, and how the soul survives death is something that rings true for me too.

Like Solomon's Tale, Solomon's Kitten is a book that will help younger children understand more about what happens after death and it teaches everyone the importance of pets and what a true gift they are when they enter our lives.

In my opinion, Solomon's Kitten is a unique story that deserves to be made into a film or TV drama.

I am definitely looking forward to reading more of this author's work in future!

Check out Omzak the Space Cat Warrior!

Omzak the Spacecat Warrior
Omzak the Space Cat Warrior

Omzak the Space Cat Warrior is an inspiring children's tale about an extraordinary intergalactic cat and the exciting adventures that he has with the variety of characters he meets on his travels.

A story that conveys "positive messages to children everywhere",  it is surely a must-read for many - including adults!

Now, we haven't read the book yet, though we'd love to read it soon, but Omzak has a Facebook page and we've gone over and clicked 'like' so we can get to know him better and follow his adventures.

Who is Omzak?
Omzak is a Catopian, and Catopians count their years like humans do, so in December 2012 he turned 15. He sounds like a fun cat because he has a rebellious nature and was even expelled from nursery school because of it.

He is a big dreamer, and always dreamed of becoming a famous warrior. Now, from what I've heard he is also extremely talented - multi-talented in fact. An accomplished pianist, and majored in astro physics, history and every other subject on the curriculum. Mmmm... getting slightly envious here and I bet most of you other cats are too. And there's more: Bational Champion of martial arts, stick fighting and athletics!

"enthralling stories to captivate young imaginations"

http://tojoandnellyscattales.com/

Tojo and Nelly's Cat Tales are books that I'm sure many children will enjoy.  But not only that, adults, especially cat lovers, will love them too!

You see, Tojo and Nelly are the real-life cats of creator and publisher Maria Merrett, and all the characters in the stories are based on those of her family’s and friends’ pets as well.

Writer Tamara Forbes brings Maria Merrett's wonderful ideas to life. They both work together on original photos of each real-life pet, before transforming them into the lovable characters you will read about in the stories. And check out the delightful illustrations by renowned artist and illustrator Nanuli Burduli. which just make the books extra special and exciting.

Tojo Meets Nelly is the first book in the series.

And now all the books in this inspiring series are available on Amazon. There is also this beautiful Christmas edition .
