Wildlife Day

tabby cat baring fangs

It's a wild one today, as you can see from my photo for this week's Wordless Whiskers Wednesday. That's because we're celebrating Wildlife Day, raising awareness for wild cats and other wildlife, and at the same time highlighting the great work of wildlife sanctuaries and charities helping these endangered animals

As this is a cat blog here are some beautiful and majestic wild cats 🦁🐯🐆

Sunday Selfie #TinyTigers4Tony

My selfie today is in support of Tony, a Siberian-Bengal tiger who has endured more than ten years of misery at the Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete, Louisiana.

He is living at an isolated gas station parking lot. Can you imagine the stench of fuel and the drone of those diesel engines? This is horrible and so very harmful to an animal with such sensitive hearing and an acute sense of smell.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund has been fighting for Tony for seven years, and are now waiting for a court decision that could finally grant Tony his freedom to be relocated to a reputable sanctuary, where he can live out the rest of his life getting the veterinary care and environment he deserves.

Please help by simply printing out the “Free Tony” sign and snapping a photo of your tiny tiger with the sign. Then you can post it on social media with the hashtag #TinyTigers4Tony to help raise awareness of Tony's plight. Come on, Tiny Tigers, let's help our dear furriend!

Tiger Tuesday - Sumatran Tiger

Mum always calls me her "little tiger" and she loves all cats, big and small, so when we were approached by Whiskas.co.uk to help in their “Help Protect A Tiger”campaign how could we refuse?

Today is the first Tiger Tuesday of the campaign, in which each week Whiskas and the WWF shine a light on one of the endangered tiger subspecies to help raise awareness around the plight of tigers in the wild.

So today on this first Tiger Tuesday we are showing our support for the endangered Sumatran tiger.

Sumatran Tiger

The Sumatran tiger is the last surviving tiger subspecies in Indonesia and the smallest of the 6 tiger subspecies: the other two native tiger subspecies, the Bali and Javan, became extinct in the 1940s and 1970s respectively.

With less than 400 individuals holding on for survival in the few remaining patches of forests on the island of Sumatra, they are still under immediate threat from poaching and habitat loss.

From 1998-2002 at least 51 Sumatran tigers per year were killed, with 76% for the illegal wildlife trade and 15% due to human-tiger conflict. (Source: Shepherd and Magnus 2004 IUCN RedList)

At least 66 Sumatran tigers – one seventh of the surviving population – were killed in one year between 1998 and 1999. (Source: Nowell (2000) Far from a Cure: The Tiger Trade Revisited TRAFFIC)

The new Whiskas “Help Protect A Tiger” TV advert features two Sumatran tiger cubs, called Argo and Dhjala. They were born in February this year and were 2 and a half months old when the advert was filmed.

You can view the Whiskas “Help Protect A Tiger” TV advert here:

Argo and Dhjala currently live at Champrépus Zoo in France with their mother, Chandra, and you can read more about them on the zoo website:
