All Hands on Pet! by Susan E. Davis, PT is an amazing resource for those interested in pet health and for those of us who care about providing the best possible care for our beloved pets. The book is aimed at pet parents/guardians as a guide to helping them take care of their pets through all stages of their lives. From kittenhood and puppyhood, right through to old age.

With her years of experience and obvious love of animals, Susan guides you to implement preventative measures with your pet at home in a clear, informative manner with easy-to-follow instructions coupled with clear illustrations. The reader will not find the language and techniques described overwhelming.

As pet parents, we all want the best for our fur-children and so it is important to arm ourselves with as much knowledge on how to care for them as possible. Of course, nothing can replace professional veterinary care and this is disclosed at the very beginning of the book. Any alternative therapy administered at home should be given simultaneously with your vet.

As an animal Reiki healer myself and with a diploma in Cat Behaviour and Care I really enjoyed learning the techniques in this book. As a cat mum and animal lover, I am interested in all aspects of animal care. I also found the resources at the end of the book really useful.

In conclusion, this is a must-read for any animal lover and pet parent and it is a book that will definitely join my other animal care books on the shelf where I can pick it up for easy reference.

Before I go, I have to add that I love that the cover of this book is green. Not only does it match our blog colour/theme and Athena's beautiful eyes, but green is also the colour of healing (we all know how calming it can be to be surrounded by the lush greenery of nature). It is also the colour I visualize when using Reiki on animals.

Dubbed as "Doctor Dolittle of the PT World" by Northwestern Medicine Magazine, Susan is a licensed physical therapist with over 40 years of experience including both human and animal physical therapy. She is the author of a previous book called "Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation for Animals...A Guide for the Consumer."

Wordless Wednesday

Today, as it's Wordless, we thought we'd celebrate the beauty of silence. Mum and I (and I'm sure all my furry pals) think this world is far too loud, and it's humans and all their inventions that make it so. Sometimes it can be really overwhelming for sensitive types like us cats and my mum. 

This morning she was ranting on about how she is fed up with being told she is far too quiet and shy when in actual fact the truth of the matter is she likes to think before engaging her mouth, which means she doesn't ramble on unnecessarily. 

This is mostly because she worries about saying the wrong thing or upsetting someone. But she also suffers from social anxiety, and maybe it's her starsign too. She's a Cancerian, likes to test the waters a bit before learning whom to trust. But I think it's because she is so much like a cat, and feline friends, are we not like that too? 

And like a cat, Mum does most of her communication by thoughts and telepathy. That's why she gets on so well with the animal kingdom, especially cats. In fact, if Mum ate meat and liked to hunt she'd make a great cat! But she's a vegan and doesn't believe in hurting living things.

We think this cat and dog video on YouTube is adorable! We love seeing cats and dogs getting along. We are all for peace and love (well, maybe Mum more than me). But as I am named after the goddess of peace and wisdom, and I am a wise cat too, I have to agree that this is a super powerful video. It proves that cats and dogs do get along and it's really nice to see!

Wordless Wednesday: National Microchipping Month

I'm a microchipped kitty. 

Hi everyone! Athena here to tell you about National Microchipping Month.

A recent survey shows that nearly half of the UK's owned cats are not microchipped. Though it is not yet a legal requirement to microchip cats in the UK, it will become compulsory for all dogs in England, Wales and Scotland from April 2016.

During the month of June there will be special microchipping offers at discounted prices for pet owners all over the country. Your local vet or local publications should have more details of offers available. 

Why microchipping is important:

• Microchipping offers a safe and permanent method of identification for your pets, increasing the chances of you being safely reunited
• Microchipping is the most effective way of identifying a lost pet
• Each microchip has a unique number. This number is stored on a national database. This chip, when scanned, reveals the owner's name and address from the database's records
• Just slightly smaller than a grain of rice, a microchip is inserted under the cat's skin between the shoulder blades
• The procedure is very simple and is no more painful than an injection. A cat will not be aware of the microchip's presence once inserted
• If you move house, you must remember to change your microchip details. You can do this by contacting your microchip database

Do You Sleep With Your Humans?

I'm a kitty who loves sleeping with my mum. There is nothing better, and Mum agrees. We both look forward to our naps together.

I sleep all curled up against her legs or on top of her. When she feels sad I purr away her fears and show her how much she is loved. And she always shows me how much she loves me back. Always petting me and cuddling me close. She gives me lots of kisses too, especially on my little cute forehead.

We are not looking forward to summer and those humid hot nights because we have to sleep apart. I either sleep at the foot of the bed or on the floor. The heat is unbearable in London. 

We don't have air conditioning but we do have an air fan. But sometimes it's just too noisy to sleep with it on all night

There should be a photo of us snuggling up together, but sadly we don't have one of any decent quality. But that's OK. It's me you all want to see anyway. Don't worry. Mum isn't upset. She agrees that there is no other thing on this earth more beautiful than a cat. As the great artist Leonardo Da Vinci once said "The smallest feline is a masterpiece".

Nice to know that someone appreciated us felines in the Middle Ages :)

How do you kitties and other furry friends like to sleep? With your humans? On the bed? On the floor? 

A Pet is for Life, Not Just Christmas!

Feeling quite annoyed because Mum has told me that lots of kitties and other animals get given as Christmas presents and then sometimes get tossed outside or given away once the novelty wears off and people get bored.

That may be OK if  the unwanted gift is a new toy or gadget, or a sweater your granny might have knitted for you but you absolutely loathe, but a pet? A little furry baby that lives and breathes and has feelings too? A little soul that feels hunger, pain, loneliness, love?

Would you do that to a human baby?

NO!

So why do some people never give it a second thought in throwing out an unwanted pet along with discarded wrapping paper and left overs? Yes, some people may not take such drastic action, but even taking an unwanted pet "gift" to a rescue shelter is bad!

WHY?

Well, that unwanted pet will probably never find another home. Oh yes, it will probably be put to sleep. Forever.

Yes, this cat goddess is very disgusted by some humans, and it's happening more and more of late. Believe me, I try to stay calm whenever I catch my mum start fuming as she reads about the horrors humans inflict on poor animals. I do it because as a cat I am a master at keeping a zen-like calm. I do it to take care of  my mum and soothe her woes.

But knowing how it feels to be abandoned, well, I really want to meow so loud and start scratching the walls (and maybe some evil humans!).

It happened to me as a kitten. I was dumped. Thrown away like rubbish. Luckily, someone found me and took me to a rescue shelter where I was taken care of until Mum came to adopt me. I was born in the merry month of May, so I wasn't a Christmas present, but who knows? I may have been a birthday present. I can't remember that far back.

If anyone reading this is thinking of giving a cat or dog as a Christmas gift (or any other animal) please consider the following:

• The person receiving the gift may not want it in the first place. 
• He or she may not want the commitment that comes with owning a pet. Or the responsibility. Being a pet owner means you have someone else to consider other than yourself for at least 15 years. It is just like having a child. Pets do not suit everyone. People are busy. Some people have to travel a lot because of their career.
• Having a pet is expensive. Not just with the cost of food, litter, etc, but think of vet bills. Pet insurance. And then there's extras like boarding kennels and catteries whenever you need to go away. 
• Don't get a pet for your small child, even if they are asking for one. Consider first if you yourself, as the child's parent, can take on the extra responsibility, because it will really be just like having another child.

As it was my birthday earlier this week I thought I'd share a photo of me as a kitten today. Mum really likes this picture of me too. Inspired by the blue blanket, she played around with PICMONKEY and came up with this delight.
