Silly Fireworks Season #SundaySelfie

Here I am chilling out this easy Sunday, hoping tonight's fireworks for Bonfire Night, which actually falls on Tuesday 5th November, aren't too loud. 

It's impossible I know.

Fireworks don't bother me much to be honest, unless they're being fired off by our neighbours. That's too close for comfort. 

Mum detests fireworks. She says what's the point? If you've seen one firework display, you've seen them all.

I mean, just what is the fascination with deafening booms and flashing lights? As an animal lover, Mum can't  understand why people with pets like to participate as most of our neighbours and many locals do have pets. Do they even care how terrifying these explosive sounds can be for animals? And that's ALL animals, not just beloved pets.

Silent or low noise fireworks are now available, but obviously the majority of the noise-obsessed public won't find them "fun" at all. Unfortunately, being excessively loud and obnoxious is all some persons can be in order to suggest they are having a good time.

 Happy Sunday!

It's too hot to move here in Essex so I'm just taking it easy. We don't have air-conditioning (not the norm in UK homes yet) but Mum has the fan running. But still it's insanely hot. Mum is complaining that she can't work on her computer because she keeps sweating. 

This is where I spend most of my hours on hot days. On my PetFusion cat scratcher/lounger. Mum has it positioned near her bed. I want the cold weather to return so we can snuggle on the bed together. Mum longs for cold nights so she can hide under the duvet and we can keep each other warm.

Happy Feline Friday!

Back to July 2017 with this photo. We were still living in North London and Mum was anxious we were never going to escape from that horrible neighbourhood.

But we did. It took a long time to sell the old house but we finally did it and moved to Essex in May 2018.

Mature Moggies Week 13-17 November #CharityTuesday

I was adopted when I was 10 weeks old. I was lucky. I found the best forever home any kitty could wish for. That was 6 years ago. I am so happy and I love my home and mum (and granny too).💚

But some cats and kittens aren't so lucky. Especially mature moggies. Some find themselves at the shelters through no fault of their own. Either they are strays, have been thrown out by selfish owners that no longer wanted them, have been left behind when their humans have moved out, or simply have gotten lost and have not been microchipped so their owners cannot be traced.  Then there are those poor cats whose humans have sadly become ill or died.

There are so many circumstances. But these dear kitties need love and affection and a warm home too. And you know what? They make marvellous companions too!

That's why this week (from 13-17 November), Cats Protection - the UK’s leading feline welfare charity that helps over 190,000 cats each year through its national network of over 250 volunteer-run branches and 34 centres - is holding a ‘Mature Moggies Week’  

From Cats Protection website:

"Figures from the charity, which show that older cats can take over twice as long to find a home as their younger counterparts, prompted the survey to understand why many ‘senior kitizens’ are being overlooked in favour of fresher-faced felines.

“Interestingly, there appears to be a misconception about what constitutes an ‘older’ cat, with 23% of respondents saying they would consider any cat aged over five years as ‘older’,” said Mark Beazley, Cats Protection’s Director of Operations.

“Actually a five-year-old cat is only 36 in human years and a cat generally isn’t classed as a senior until it reaches 11 years of age.”

A survey of 2,000 people who currently own or have previously owned cats, was commissioned by Cats Protection during September 2017 Some other key findings from the survey included:

Character and medical history were the most important considerations for people when choosing a new cat (with 87% and 83% classing them as important respectively), followed by age (68%).
Just 24% of respondents said they would be likely to consider an older cat, compared to 68% of respondents who would be likely to consider getting a kitten.
Less than 4% of people knew that the equivalent human age for a one-year-old cat is 15 years old. The majority (69%) thought that it was five years old.
Only 16% of people knew that the equivalent human age for a five-year-old cat is 36 years old. The most popular answer (38%) was 25 years old.
The top reasons given for not considering an older cat were that it might not live long (72%), it would more likely to get ill (56%) and if it is unwell it will cost money (40%).
Almost a fifth (19 %) of people who were unlikely to consider an older cat said that one of the reasons was that older cats are not very playful.
Owners of older cats cited the top three: they are calmer (58%), they don’t want to leave the house as much (54%) and it feels like they are more of a family member (52%).
Cats Protection says improvements in cat care have greatly raised the life expectancy and quality of life for household moggies, with many now living into their late teens and early 20s in remarkably good health.

However, figures from the charity’s centres show that cats aged 11 and over spend an average of 33 days waiting to be adopted – twice as long as the overall average time of 15 days and over four times longer than kittens, who wait an average of just eight days.

“It’s a shame that older cats stay with us longer as they have a lot to offer,” added Mark. “They tend to stay closer to home, so they are less likely to be involved in road traffic accidents and more likely to enjoy curling up on a warm lap, making them great companions.

“Their characters are fully formed so you know what sort of cat you’re getting and they’re less likely to scale the curtains or knock your ornaments off the shelf! That said, older cats can often still be quite playful when they choose to be and many enjoy a few short games each day.

“Life in a pen is no substitute for a permanent home so we would urge people to consider adopting an older cat.

“All cats adopted from Cats Protection have been fully health-checked and come with a full medical history and four weeks’ free pet insurance which will cover any new conditions that arise after adoption.”

During Mature Moggies Week, Cats Protection will be asking people to share stories about their own cats as well as providing educational messages and advice to those who either own or are thinking about adopting an older cat.

She can be a little nervous about people she doesn't know at first, but soon relaxes and starts to purr loudly.  She is looking for a quiet home where she can be the centre of attention and have all the love she deserves! It's every girl's dream to be a magazine cover girl. As I have yet to achieve this dream,  Mum decided to create this for me. Let's hope one day it becomes a reality!

Talking of magazines, did you know that The Cat magazine has been around and speaking up for cats since 1931?

What is The Cat?

The Cat is Cats Protection’s official quarterly magazine and recently it celebrated the conclusion of its 85th year in print. 

Throughout this time the publication, which was initially entitled The Cats’ Mews-Sheet, has given cat lovers a wealth of information on cats and their welfare. Imagine that - a magazine all about cats published so long ago! Way before my time of course (and Mum says way before hers too).

It costs just £15 a year to subscribe to The Cat. Alternativley, you can become a member of The Cat's Protection (like my mum), and receive the magazine that way. Cats Protection is the UK's leading feline welfare charity, helping round 200,000 cats and kittens every year through their national network of over 250 volunteer-run branches and 32 centres.  As a member, you will be showing your support and help shape the future of this fantastic charity.

Adopt a Cat Month

As an adopted kitty myself, I want to spread the word about pet adoption. 

I want to show you how easy it is to find the cat for you! It's simpler these days because we have the Internet. Most animal charities now have their own websites where you can search for your new furry friend from the comfort of your own home.

That's how Mum found me. She was looking to adopt a cat and had tried her local RSPCA cat shelter but there were no kittens available for rehoming at the time. As she hadn't had a cat for 13 years after her beloved Suzy crossed the Rainbow Bridge, she felt she was finally ready to get another cat, and she wanted a kitten. She would love to adopt many cats but it's not possible right now. Anyway, she felt sad that there were no kittens available at the time, but something told her to try elsewhere. So, a few weeks later, she came across my picture on the Wood Green website, and as you know, the rest is history!

It was love at first sight for both of us, and though Mum rescued me, she always says that I rescued her right back. You can read my story in my book, which I wrote with Mum to raise awareness and funds for homeless cats. 100% of the royalties earned will be donated to 3 of the cat charities we support. In the book itself it states that only some of the royalties will be donated, but Mum decided she would rather just donate the whole lot.

As I am from England, I want to show those of you humans who are wanting to rehome a cat in the UK how you can find a cat in your area with the Cats Protection. Just go to http://www.cats.org.uk/find-a-cat and search by postcode.

You can also search CatChat.org,  an amazing cat rescue resource which lists cat charities and shelters all over the UK. With so many cats listed, you are bound to find the right one for you! A lot of the cats available are from the Cats Protection too.

For those of you in the United States and abroad please check out your local animal shelter.

Many animal shelters are full to bursting, and unfortunately many unwanted cats and other animals are killed because they cannot be rehomed. There are high-kill shelters in some countries where animals never really get a chance to live the life they so deserve. It is such a shame and so heartbreaking to see the sad faces and frightened eyes of all those homeless cats at these 'rescue' shelters. But we are not helping if we ignore their plight. 

Most of you have probably heard of the Urgent Pets on Death Row website, which is dedicated to saving NYC shelter animals. Created in 2010, the charity is an advocate for the thousands of adoptable dogs and cats that are needlessly killed each year by the Animal Care & Control of New York City.

If you are not in the position to adopt right now you can help animals in need in so many other ways, like fostering them or sharing their pictures and stories through social media. You never know, that one single step can change a homeless pet's life for ever.

There are also many animal charities and rehoming shelters around the world. One charity Mum supports is the Greek Cat Welfare Society

Formed in 1992, the Greek Cat Welfare Society's aim is to undertake neutering of colonies of stray cats and in doing so educate and encourage local people to also have their animals neutered.

Those of you that have holidayed in Greece and the Greek Islands will no doubt have noticed the many many abandoned, stray and feral cats. They survive during the tourist season through the kindness of the tourists and holidaymakers who feed them. But come the end of summer, they are sadly forgotten. Some kind locals do take over and help to feed them, but unfortunately there are many cat-hating people that would rather let them starve and even poison them. Awful, isn't it?

So please, help animals in whatever way you can. And if you want to adopt, go ahead. You won't regret it one bit!
