Sofa Without The Throw #SundaySelfie

Mum removed the throw from the sofa as it needed a wash and I leaped onto the sofa before she could replace it with another.

Some of you have been asking how I am. Mum has got me totally off dry food now and is feeding me a veterinary diet of wet food. She is not feeding me the usual vet prescription recommended diet which has all the ingredients she doesn't like. Instead, she is feeding this Urinary diet food by a German brand called Smilla.

Mum took me to a new vet for a second opinion and she recommended that Mum continues to monitor me with the new diet. We will keep you updated.

Mum's been feeding me wet food and no dry. Also taking Cystease which helps. It's a urinary tract supplement for cats.

Happy Caturday! 

How can anyone be moody in sunlight, I hear you ask? Only vampires maybe, right? And my highly sensitive Mum. 

But why would a beautiful goddess feline like myself be miserable when the sun shines? 

I'll tell you why. My Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease didn't go away. It did for a few days and then it came back. I keep wanting to use the litter tray to pee and only a small amount comes out. 

I finished my Cystease tablets, which helped for a while, and the Metacam, and Mum thought I was over it. But the last few days it came back and Mum panicked, making me panic even more. So today, Friday, I went to the vet again. Horrible experience. I wanted to escape from my carrier. I got angry at Mum. Then there was a big dog who came up to my carrier and stuck his big face right at me. Luckily his owner, who said he was harmless, pulled him away. Mum told her I wasn't used to dogs, which is true. But talk about invading my personal space!

The vet thinks I have an infection and so gave me an antibiotic injection which lasts 2 weeks and more Metacam, along with another 10 days supply of Cystease. Let's hope this makes me better.

Anyway, just so you know, these photos are not recent, but Mum found them on her computer and decided to tart them up a bit for Caturday Art. They were taken at the window, with bright afternoon sunlight streaming in so I'm screwing up my eyes. The photos were over-exposed so Mum had no use for them. But she thought she'd try doing something artsy with them, so here they are. And I look quite moody on them, which suits my mood purrfectly this week 😾

As you can see from this pic, I am daydreaming of the yummy cat food I got the chance to taste last month!

Now, I'm going to have to admit something here. You see, I am no stranger to Vet's Kitchen. I used to eat (and love) their Chicken with Brown Rice, which unfortunately made me put on weight so Mum stopped giving it to me and switched to another brand that had a much higher meat content (because she also felt the rice wasn't great for a carnivore like me.) The new brand of dry food she gave me was quite tasty too so I didn't mind the switch, and I loved the higher meat content and in fact, it did do me good!

So which flavour did I like best?

Though chicken is my favourite food, I didn't love the chicken version of this one that much. Yes, I enjoyed eating it (felt a bit hard to chew at times), but then when it came to tasting the 80% salmon pack I couldn't believe how good it tasted! This surprised Mum. And me even more. I mean, I am not a cat that goes mad for fish! In fact, I always find it too stinky.

This one was my favourite!

So now it's been 30 days on this healthy cat food challenge and I can tell you that I really liked this food. Especially the salmon one. It was delicious and Mum and I agreed that the smell isn't overpowering, unlike most fishy foods. For some reason, I found the salmon crunchies easier to chew, as opposed to the chicken.

I seemed to digest it well, but my poo came out quite dark though. As for coat quality, I do have a nice, shiny, soft coat, but then again, I always have done. But Mum thinks it is now even shinier and softer since I've been on this diet so that must be an improvement. As for my temperament, I was very laid back (Mum says lazy) and I slept a lot. But July has been a very hot month and the heat tends to make me lethargic, so can't really tell if the food made me calmer. Mum noticed I looked slimmer too, so it must be down to the calorie controlled portions!

I really hope Mum gets me more of this food (especially the salmon). She's a bit concerned about me eating salmon though, as she's heard bad stuff about it. But this is good quality food, and salmon is a protein-rich source of healthy energy full of Omega 3, which promotes healthy skin and a shiny coat and I will make sure she buys it for me! This is a complete cat food, but she doesn't like to give me dry food all the time, so I know she will continue to give me some wet too, which I don't mind.

Sunday Selfie

Happy Sunday!

If you celebrate Easter then I hope you're having a good one. Don't eat too many Easter eggs though - and cat friends, don't eat any! Remember, chocolate is very bad for felines. Also, make sure you keep away from lilies. Tell your owner/guardian/parent/human not to have any in the house.

I think I'm going to take it easy today and let Mum eat her chocolate egg while I just take a nap. Hope I get extra treats later!

As you can see, we are finally getting into the festive mood. However, as Mum always has the tendency to get overwhelmed by many things, Christmas being one, I have to tell you that the pic above is not our Christmas card. She is still working on it. All will be revealed on Caturday Art Day.

But we can see that most of you have already created such lovely Christmas and Holiday cards and we are enjoying viewing them all. It's obvious a lot of humans love the holiday season, but it's very important to remember that this time of year can actually be quite a hazardous time for cats (and all pets).

Christmas trees can be mildly toxic to cats. Pine needles can cause vomiting or intestinal obstruction and punctures, and lights, baubles and other decorations can be harmful. Avoid decorations made of glass and other breakable or sharp materials. Christmas tree lights can give your cat an electric shock or burns. Tinsel is best avoided too.

Wordless Wednesday: A Few Words About My Diet

Don't know what happened to my eyes in this photo but it's a great shot of my tongue, don't you think? And look at those fangs! Mum says my stripy chest is lovely and she always likes to kiss me there and rub her cheek on my soft fur. I love my mum.

But I'm not happy with some of the food choices she's made for me of late. She says it's for my own good and she is spending a lot on money on trying to find me the right wet food to eat because all I do is eat dry. Well, I can't help it if I find wet food quite revolting. Even the more expensive brands just make me turn away and beg for more kibble. She's trying different brands of that too. More meaty ones that don't contain rice and other grains. She has spent hours on the Net researching.

There is one food that I do rather like but I'm still trying not to show her this because I don't want her to think she's won. However, it is hard not to resist licking that jelly and then beg for more! 

During her research Mum went into lots of cat forums to see what other fussy cats were eating and what cat foods were of better quality than the usual supermarket rubbish that contain hardly any meat at all.

Mum found that this food that I'm currently sort of liking is from Sweden (and Mum loves Sweden and has visited many times because her brother, my uncle, lives over there.) Anyway, she didn't actually have to go out there and get this food because it is available from Zooplus and Mum decided to order it. This is the food. Mum got the Indoor Cat one. So there you are. It has really tasty jelly and I like the way Mum mashes the food up for me to make it look like baby food. She says I'm her baby so she doesn't mind doing that. Caturday Art

Before I show you the art for this week's Caturday Art Blog Hop I'd like to thank you all for your comments on our last post. I am feeling better now, but Mum has been trying to make me eat wet food and I haven't eaten that since I was a kitten. I just won't touch it!

She has been trying to switch my food for ages. She tells me she is doing it for my own good because dry food isn't healthy to eat all the time. She thinks that's why I had the urinary problem the other day. 

What do you furry friends eat? Do you prefer dry to wet? Does your human make you eat things you don't like?

We didn't have time to do much 'art' with this photo. It is quite simple. Mum just created it using her old favourite Pixlr. 

In this photo I was napping on Mum's lap yesterday morning while she was giving me Reiki. She added the green light because this is a healing colour and it's the one she pictures in her mind flowing from her hands as she does the healing.

Had to go to the vet

Sorry we didn't publish our regular Melt Your Heart Monday post yesterday, but I wasn't feeling well and Mum had to take me to the vet.

I kept wanting to pee in the litter tray but only a tiny amount would come out. Mum got worried when I vomitted a bit and had a bit of runny poo as well. Well, she called the vet and then took me there that morning. That didn't help because I was stressed and Mum was stressed, so you can imagine the stress feeding off us both. I'm a cat, and so I'm sensitive, but then so is Mum. Far too sensitive so I suppose she was a cat in a past life or something.

Anyway, we got there, and I won't describe what he did, but he said it's probably stress-related and I had a urine tract infection or something like that. Mum was suspicious of the booster vaccine that he gave me last week and asked if it could be a reaction to that. Of course he said no, it wasn't. But Mum can't help wondering if it was indeed the vaccine because I had been fine up to that point.

He said perhaps the fireworks in the neighbourhood may have caused me to feel nervous and anxious. Mum said I hadn't shown any signs of being scared of them. Some cats might not show any outward signs, the vet said to her, but they can still be bothered by all the loud noise. 

Mum thinks the stress of going to the vets and hearing those dogs barking really stressed me out last week, so maybe there is some truth that it could be stress-related.

We don't know, but today I am pleased to report that I urinated in my litter tray as normal and I still want to eat a lot, though Mum won't give me that much food any more as I need to lose some weight the vet said.

Pets are family, and as a responsible pet owner it is vital to know what to do in an emergency, just like you should for any member of your family. It's also important to have a Pet First Aid Kit, like this one.

You should always contact your vet if your pet: 

• Is weak, lethargic or is reluctant to move or get up.
• Has difficulty breathing, or the breath is noisy or rapid.
• Is coughing constantly
• Is vomiting repeatedly
• Appears to be in severe pain.
• Has lost balance
• Is having trouble going to the toilet (is unable to pass anything).
• Has any abnormal discharges from the nose, eyes or ears, or other body openings.
• Is shaking head excessively
• Is excessively scratching, licking or biting at any part of the body 
• ls not eating.
• Is thirstier than usual.
• Has abnormal swellings on any part of the body
• Is hiding or constantly seeking a place to hide

Check your pet's Vital Signs. If anything is out of the ordinary CONTACT YOUR VET ASAP.

BASIC FIRST AID

• Ensure the safety of yourself and others first.
• Try to remain calm to assess the situation. Assess the animal and injury first. Ensure the safety of the animal making sure it is in no further danger.
• Keep people and other animals away from the patient.
• Cover the patient with a blanket or similar to maintain body temperature, or if in full sun remove the patient and put him or her into the shade or place a cover above the animal to bring shade.
• Remove harmful substances and objects from the close vicinity of the animal.
• Make sure that any people around are not shouting or talking loudly
• Keep animal comfortable until further help arrives

World Spay Day 24th February 2015

Athena here. Mum wanted me to write this post so here I am. Did you know that on the last Tuesday of February (doesn't time fly?) it is World Spay Day?

What is World Spay Day?

World Spay Day is a day that hopes to highlight the importance of neutering and spaying your furry babies. Now, I'm not exactly sure what I think about that. All I know is that it was done to me when I was about five months old. It wasn't very nice. Mum took me back to the place where we met and left me there and the lady vet there did it to me.

I didn't feel a thing of course, because she gave me something that made me sleepy. When I woke up, even though I was groggy, I remembered my mum and I was worried I would never see her again. Perhaps she had taken me back because she didn't want me any more?

But she did come back. A few hours later, she tells me. And she took me home and then I realised I was made ugly. Why? Because bits of my fur were missing, that's what! A big patch of it. And Mum wouldn't let me lick my horrible wound, and she kept a big watch over me so I wouldn't touch it. She made everything feel better with lots of extra cuddles and treats, though. Her healing energy made me feel better too and I sat on her lap a lot. But soon I was running around like the crazy little kitty I was again. The fur grew back quickly and I was back to my beautiful goddess self.

Mum says she wishes she had some good quality photos of me with my fur shaved off, but she hasn't, and I'm pleased! I don't want it shown here. That would be embarrassing.

But what am I doing? I'm scaring you kitties! And it wasn't my intention because Mum says this is a VERY IMPORTANT post.

You see, if kitties don't get spayed, there will soon be lots and lots of other kitties around, and then what will your humans do? And what about all the strays and homeless pets? Some cats don't have a great life like us fortunate pampered ones, you know. They are orphaned, homeless, starving, they get sick, and there are just too many. These poor kitties, if they don't die of natural causes, usually end up being killed by humans anyway because silly humans don't know what to do with them. I know. Very nasty! Mum doesn't want to think about that, and I don't either. Why humans want to control the world is another matter, and that would make a rather long post. I think that one is for mum to write, perhaps on her other blog.

At the Vet

Yesterday I got tricked into going to the vet again. I hate it when that happens!

I knew something was up when I saw this old devil..

I knew something was up as soon as I saw my carrier this morning

Mum doesn't have a car so once I was put into the carrier (or should I say forced because obviously I resisted at first) and stepped out into the sunshine (I resisted some more by kicking and trying to push the bar open) we had to walk a short while to the bus stop. It was so noisy out there, I can tell you. Lots of traffic and ugly city smells. I could feel my mum's own anxiety as, like me, she doesn't like being outside much. But she tried to calm me down with the light baby voice she uses, which I have to admit does the trick. When I hear her soothing voice I feel safe, but I was also worried that she may be taking me to the pet hotel again. Oh, what a nightmare week that was! 

We waited at the bus stop and then the bus came along - a massive red monster of a thing - and we hopped on. People kept looking at me but my mum held the carrier with me in it on her lap. Don't tell my mum, but I quite liked the bus ride. It was only a short little ride and when Mum looked into the carrier at me I pretended to ignore her. After all, she tricked me again, didn't she?  Being a wise cat, I know it's for my own good that she takes me to the vet. And it wasn't that bad this time because there were no loud dogs barking like last time we went. Just the receptionist talking loudly with another lady for a while. It bothered my ears a bit and I could tell it bothered my mum a bit too. She has sensitive hearing you see, or should I say heightened and much more acute than the usual human. She is HSP - highly sensitive person. It may cause her anxiety but I figure if she wasn't so sensitive she wouldn't be so caring to us animals so I do wish she'd stop stressing about it.

Anyway, we didn't have long to wait to see the vet. He seemed nicer than the one I saw last time but I was still on my guard and I hissed at him just to show him who's boss. He examined me, said I had really soft fur and I could tell he liked stroking it. All was going well until he said I was living too much of the good life and that I should go on a diet as I was getting a bit chubby. Well, Mum wasn't happy about her child being called fat, which I'm not, but she said she will exercise me more and watch my food intake. Which means less treats for me!!!

But I thought about it later on the way home and, being a goddess and cat model, I have to take care of my looks, so I will have to agree with Mum.

After I had my booster vaccination and Mum paid the receptionist we went home on the bus. As it was a nice sunny day, I think I rather enjoyed my little trip but I didn't like being told I'm getting chubby around the middle!

Some dog owners even go to great lengths to home-cooking their own dog food for their dog, so why shouldn’t this be the case for cats too?

Oh no, not again!

I've just been reading my mum's blog and I've found out something awful.

I won't keep you in suspense.

She actually wants to brush my teeth. Apparently it's National Pet Dental Health month and so it's got her thinking about how she hasn't been able to achieve her aim. I really thought she'd given up on it.

I think my fangs look great as they are. But then she keeps telling me that it's vital for my health and well-being to clean them. She also says they will rot if I don't and I will get smelly breath.

I wish she'd stop listening to those vets. Spending too much time on-line isn't helping either. She's just getting brainwashed by all this so-called 'advice'.  But come to think of it, and as a very wise cat who likes to do a lot of thinking, I think my mum does have a point.

What do you think? Shall I let her brush my teeth? As a loving caring human, she is a wonderful mother and I know she'd never hurt me. It's just the thought of that brush (it may be tiny to her, but it looks massive to me) in my mouth makes me nervous.

Moofy Would Love Some Advice and Likes!

My friend Moofy would love some more likes on her Facebook page.

She is a cute tabby with 'a big stripy tumor.'

Brave Moofy needs to shrink the tumour and wondered if anyone could give her and her guardian's Liz and Pat any advice.

Moofy lives in New Zealand with her guardians and two brothers and sisters. She believes she is the quirkiest tabby ever. She is also a World Champion Curtain Climber and holds the record for the Longest Time Spent on Back with Legs in Air. She says she's the First Cat to Wag her Tail better than a dog.

Best of all, Moofy is a courageous kitty because she won't let her tumour stop her from enjoying life. She loves to rush around in the garden and climbing trees, and in her own words 'looking incredibly cute.'

The vet has already said to Moofy and her guardians that the tumour is in an awkward place to be removed surgically.  Moofy is glad about that because she hates going to the vet, and who can blame her?
