Are Cats Introverts?

As this week (18 -24 March) is Introverts Week I asked Mum to blog about whether cats are introvert or not.

I'm in two minds about it but Mum thinks cats are indeed very introverted. For example, she says cats are more introverted than dogs. And yes, compared to those woof woofs, we cats are more introverted. Extroverts are loud. And most dogs are too. Cats are quiet and masters of mindfulness. Cats would rather sit and observe. Mum is a lot like a cat in that respect (not the masters of mindfulness part).

As an introvert, Mum believes that's one reason why she gets on with the feline species so well. Mum could have been a cat (though I don't think she'd love the hunting for prey or eating meat part).

As for me, I am mostly introvert but I'm a little more extrovert than Mum. Though Mum can be a little extroverted too when it comes to expressing herself through music and singing.

Below are 5 reasons why cats are introverts. We're sure there are others but time was limited and Mum could only quickly come up with these. If you can add to the list please do so in the comments.

5 Reasons why cats are introverts

1. Cats enjoy their own company and keep themselves to themselves. This is also my introvert Mum without a doubt.

2. Cats only need affection on their terms and will come to you when they want. They will give affection when it feels right. I'd say most introverts are like that too and I know Mum is.

3. If things overwhelm cats they need to find a quick hideaway. Sensory overload is all too real for us and so is the need to recharge. Mum does this a lot. As a highly sensitive person, she gets the sensory overload loads.

4. Cosy duvet days and naps are a must. Self-care is so important and cats know how to do this so well. Introverted humans should take note and if you can, take a nap. You will feel better, I promise.

5. Cats can read your thoughts. I can tell exactly what you're thinking. Can Mum? Yes, she is quite intuitive. Like a cat she silently observes and like a cat, she is quite good at reading body language. Of course, cats don't talk (not verbally) and Mum isn't much of a talker. Maybe that's why she's a writer?

So I want to put this over to you - are my feline friends and followers introverts? Are your humans?

Here's my art for today. The deep thoughtful gaze of an introvert with her rich inner world. Mum used the MySketch app on her phone.

Well, we have two extroverts (me and Binga) and one introvert (Boodie) here! So I'd say there are definitely a good percentage of extrovert cats out there! I think part of it depends on how they are socialized, and part of their genetics, blended with their home situation.

OH! I love that pencil sketch effect!

Memories of Eric and Flynn said...

Eric was definitely an extrovert. Everyone was a friend as far as he was concerned and he always made sure they knew it.
Flynn was not really timid but more shy. I couldn't really describe him as an introvert really. He would come somewhere between the two personalities.
I love the sketch art.

I am an introvert and our 3 kitties that we have now are introverts, but Smudge was definitely an extrovert. He walked up and introduced himself to any stranger!

Beautiful art. I am definitely an introvert and most of my cats are too. Thanks for hosting. XO

Interesting facts. Mom is a total introvert. Noelle is too but Raz and Allie are not.
We like your artwork.

Some of us are introverts and some of us are not. Mau and Misty May definitely are not. They must be in Mom and Dad's faces at all times, and the only time they stop talking is when they are sleeping or eating. They can be very annoying. Your art is lovely as always, Athena. Beautiful art today Athena! I'm not sure about the introvert part, it all depends on the individual.

Athena, I always thought I was an introvert, because I was so shy. But, I can stop a person on the street and strike up a conversation, so that's not an introvert. Cats, being prey and predator, have natural tendency to keep themselves safe, so they hide or run away easily. Then, there is a cat like The PO'M, who wants to be the center of attention, no matter what.

Great post! I sometimes think I'm more of an introvert than Mudpie is!

Yang is an EXTROVERT, but then we think Yang is a dog disguised as a cat.

I'd say I'm an introvert.

I'm more introvert than extravert, just like Granny and Grandpaw is more Extravert. Granny's angel Angel was also more introvert, but her Gismo and Muschy were more extravert, than introvert. It's nice to see all the different characters and noticing that we're all so much the same :D Your artwork is very beautiful, but so are you, sweet Athena. Happy Pawkisses for a wonderful Sunday๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ˜ฝ๐Ÿ’ž

this was a great post! I think Cody is a mixture...he is definitely a "people" cat but he also hides away. Me? If people who knew me heard me say I am sometimes an introvert they would laugh their heads off. I once took one of those psychological tests and I am actually a mixture. I am EXTREMELY extroverted when I want to be........but.........I also require TONS of alone time.......I am probably more extrovert than introvert but as I said, I need to be on my own (alone) quite often.
